Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn, the Princess Srisavangavadhana has excellence in many branches of science. She has a good vision in applying sciences to improve the living quality of people and in 1986, after all her hard and long-time work, she was granted the gold medal award of Albert Einstein by UNESCO, as the world’s third recipient and first female scientist to ever receive this award. She founded and chaired Chulabhorn Research Institute for biomedical and chemistry research in 1987 and established Chulabhorn Graduate Institute for knowledge base continuum on science in 2005. Later, she also initiated Chulabhorn Cancer Center and National Cycloton and PET Scan Center.

In the environmental field, HRH Princess Chulabhorn is the world’s prominent scientist in the field of chemical carcinogens and toxins and therefore granted EMS Hollaender International Award in 2002 and an honorary member of International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2004. Apart from her internationally-acclaimed excellence in science, she is also excellent and globally praised in art and music.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn has profound interest in pets and adopts various breeds of dogs herself, including mixed-breed stray dogs and handicapped dogs as well as the desert lizard called bearded dragon. She is actively engaged in veterinary science and privately observed and assisted in a C-section birth to her dog’s puppies at the hospital. She studied Doctor of Philosophy Program in Bio-Veterinary Science (International Program) at Kasetsart University with a keen interest in anesthesia for animals and practiced anesthetic work so earnestly and attentively at Kasetsart Veterinary Teaching Hospital for more than 125 days, including the surgeries and CT Scan or MRI for sick animals, both owned and homeless. In 2014, she graduated a PhD in Bio-Veterinary Science with her thesis titled “Effect of Morphine and Morphine-Tramadol Infusions in Sevoflurane-Anesthetized Dogs” and a Honorary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kasetsart University.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn has published articles on veterinary science in various international academic journals e.g. Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia Journal (2014), American Journal of Veterinary Research (2015) and The Journal of Veterinary Medical Science (2019) as well as the work presented in American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM Forum) in 2014.

In 2014, HRH Princess Chulabhorn kindly granted the Animal Anesthesia Machine and the Vital Sign Patient Monitor to Kasetsart Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This Animal Anesthesia Machine is considered the most advanced technology in Thai veterinary field and was later installed in mobile surgical unit under Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn’s initiation.

During Thailand’s flood crisis in 2011 that affected both people and animals in Central Thailand and Bangkok Metropolitan, HRH Princess Chulabhorn initiated “Princess Chulabhorn’s Vet Volunteer” working in corporation with Princess Mother’s Medical Volunteer (PMMV) in various parts of Thailand.

After King Bhumibol’s initiation of founding “Fund for the Heath Care of Abandoned Animals” in 2003 using two-million-Baht fund from selling Khun Thong Daeng T-Shirts, HRH Princess Chulabhorn upgraded the fund as “Foundation for the Heath Care of Abandoned Animals” in 2013 and opened “Dr. Namjai Shop” at Kasetsart Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The foundation’s name is now changed to “Tippimarn for Abandoned and Sickness Animals Foundation under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn”.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn initiated and became the chairman of the government’s nationwide rabies-free project (“The Project”) operated under her policies: to make Thailand a rabies-free country; to make merit for the late King Bhumibol as the National Father of Thai people; to bring happiness to the dogs’ life, to generate career opportunities for the local people; to establish the standardized animal shelters for homeless dogs in 5 provinces, initially, i.e. Udon Thani, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Chiangmai, Bangkok and the large-scale Nakhonchaiburin Animal Shelter in Nakhon Ratchasima; and install the microchips as dog registration to enforce responsibilities to dog owners in terms of vaccination and care as well as the punishment for dog abandonment.

The Project has the strategies to operate under the royal policies: (1) To guard, prevent and control rabies in animals (by Live Stock Department); (2) To manage the animal shelter system (by Faculty of Veterinary, Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Nakhon Sri Thammarat and Chiangmai); (3) To guard, prevent and control rabies in humans (by Department of Communication Disease Control); (4) To propel the rabies operation in local communities (by Department of Local Administration); (5) To manage the public relation works (by The Government Public Relations Department); (6) To integrate and manage the rabies data (by Faculty of Veterinary, Kasetsart University in corporation with Live Stock Department); (7) To follow up and evaluate the results (by Office of the Inspector General); and (8) To develop innovations and pass on technologies (by Kasetsart University), with the target to create a sustainable rabies-free environment for all human and animals.

From her hard work on this project, HRH Princess Chulabhorn has been appointed by World Health Organization (WHO) as the leader in the rabies operation not only in Thailand but all over Asia. In 2018, she spoke in the Driving Progress Towards Rabies Elimination Conference by presenting the late King Bhumibol’s royal strategies as the guideline for the rabies operation in Kathmandu, Nepal.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn used her private fund to build “Tippiman Veterinary Hospital” at Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima as the quality, internationally standardized veterinary hospital operated by HRH Princess Chulabhorn College of Medical Science.

In August 2019, Miss Kirin Techawongtham, a young blinded woman together with her family and her guide dog named “Luther” had a chance to have an audience before HRH Princess Chulabhorn at Tippiman Palace to receive moral support, as a way to encourage Thai people to understand the working of a guide dog for the blind. In this regard, HRH Princess Chulabhorn also offered the guideline to develop guide dogs for the blind in Thailand, under the responsibilities of the Director-General of Royal Thai Army Veterinary & Remount Department.

HRH Princess Chulabhorn has such evident excellence in various fields, bringing the greatest pride to all Thai citizen and the noblest favors to not only Thai but the global populations as well.
